Booking a trip to Cuba may not be the easiest thing in the world to do, but the recent drop in some restrictions on travel to the Caribbean nation are promising and hopefully a sign of things to come. This sentiment especially rings true if you are a cigar fan. If you are allowed to travel to Cuba, a huge cigar event is taking place later this month that may be hard to pass up. It's the 13th annual Festival del Habano, and it is taking place in Havana, Cuba, from February 21-25.

The Festival del Habano is one of the largest annual gatherings of cigar enthusiasts in the world. The festival offers plenty of events, both fun and educational, that bring together cigar fans and creators. The spotlight is expected to shine on three renowned brands from Habanos S.A.: H. Upmann, Montecristo, and Partagas. Habanos' selections expected to be released during 2011 will be available for sampling by attendees as well, making this a must-see event for true Habanos fans.

As stated, Festival del Habano 2011 will bring fans and actual members of the tobacco industry together. Producers, dealers, distributors, sales executives, and La Casa del Habano managers are expected to be on hand to provide insight from different perspectives within the cigar world. Since many will be coming into Havana from various parts of the world, translators will also be on hand to ease communication.

The festival will kick off on February 21st with a press conference. That will be followed by the trade fair's opening in the afternoon. A concert with Leo Brouwer, winner of a 2010 Latin Grammy Award will kick of the night's festivities that will conclude with a cocktail party dedicated to the Partagas brand. The next two days of the festival will include visits to plantations, tastings, and lectures on cigar rolling and other topics.

February 24th's itinerary consists of a visit to Habanos factories, some blind tasting, and a session on combining Habanos cigars with Cuban aged rums. The fifth and final day of the festival will include a session on combining Cuban chocolates and Habanos and a Montecristo Gala.

The Festival del Habano 2011 appears to have quite the lineup. If you have the time and the ability to travel to Havana for this event, you should probably take advantage of it. For those that cannot attend due to travel restrictions, let's hope that even more progress is made in the future to give cigar lovers the opportunity to visit Cuba to sample some of the nation's cigars on its home soil.
