cignews5.4As always, the cigar industry has no shortage of news to report. Today's edition of news on Puff.com will focus on three distinct stories. We'll discuss the arrest of a high profile member of Habanos S.A., an interesting golf and cigar-related promotion, and one man's hopes of earning yet another world record for his efforts.

VP of Habanos S.A. arrested last August

The Economist, a British news magazine, recently reported that Manuel Garcia, Habanos S.A.'s Vice President, has been in jail since last August on accusations of mastermind graft on a grand scale. Ten of Garcia's staffers are also accused and face trial for allegedly selling genuine Cuban cigars at a fraction of their price to black market distributors in the Caribbean. The discounts were applied in exchange for bribes. Since the number of cigars solid in this manner is believed to be quite high, the losses for the companies involved is substantial.

Habanos S.A. is a joint venture between Altadis and Cubatabaco that was founded in 1994. The Cuban government owns Cubatabaco, while Spain's Altadis is owned by Imperial Tobacco, which is British. The company was established to help market Cuban cigars and other tobacco products on a national and global scale. Habanos has accomplished that task since its inception, as it has successfully created a presence in over 150 countries that account for approximately 90 percent of its revenues.

Manuel Garcia held his position with Habanos for over ten years. Beyond his everyday tasks as vice president, he also participated as a host for past cigar festivals in Havana. Imperial Tobacco had no official comment on the matter, but they did express a desire for Habanos' new management team to continue the company's tradition of successfully marketing Cuban cigars.

A year or two ago, I remember Puff.Com posting a number of interview videos between a Puff "staffer" and some big shot cigar store owner in the Caribbean (Bahamas? Bermuda? I forget) ...

Anyway, if that Puff interview is still hanging around, how about getting back to that Caribbean cigar store owner now about Manuel Garcia's graft and bribery @ Habanos SA? Unless the Cuban cigar selling store owner should be able to fill in things quite nicely and willing to talk (unless of course he's complicit in the crime) ....
