Have you ever dreamed of launching your own brand of cigars? This week, we spotlight entrepreneurs who have made that dream come true. Ever wanted to learn how to roll your own cigars? Even if you can’t make it to the crash course in rolling taking place in Houston this weekend, you can catch it online and pick up a few pointers. Looking for a great place to score premium smokes without paying premium prices? We have that, too!

José Blanco Launches Cigar Company

With gigs as VP of Joya de Nicaragua and sales director of La Aurora under his belt, José Blanco has the kind of experience that it takes to start your own cigar company, and that’s just what he’s done. Blanco has returned to his roots in the Dominican Republic, where his Las Cumbres Tobaco is based.

The first release from the new brand, which translates to “the summits of tobacco,” will be a boutique cigar called Señorial by José Blanco. The Señorial will feature Dominican tobaccos, including Piloto Cubaano, encased in an Ecuadoran wrapper. Available in five sizes, the new cigar will go in sale in May or June. Be warned that Blanco calls the Señorial “the strongest cigar I’ve ever made.”

Perez-Carillo and Giannini Team Up for Re-United

Blanco isn’t the only industry veteran starting something new.  Old friends Ernesto Perz-Carillo of EPC Cigar Co. and Michael Giannini of General Cigar have joined forces to create a new cigar. The cleverly named Re+United is a limited edition cigar made from tobaccos from both parties, who agree they have enjoyed working together again. As Giannini puts it, “This is all about friends getting together and having fun.”

The resulting smoke is made from an Ecuador Havana leaf wrapper, Connecticut broadleaf binder and a filler mix of Dominican Piloto Cubano and Nicaraguan Jalapa. The Re+United comes in just one size, 6 ½” x 54 ring gauge. This is the first time the two amigos have worked together since their days at La Gloria Cubana, but it’s not likely to be the last.

Asylum Expands St. Patrick’s Day Cigar Line

What could be a better complement to green beer than a green cigar? Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, Asylum Cigars is expanding its special line of green striped cigars, dubbed the Ogre. A barber-pole style cigar crafted from candela leaf, the Asylum Ogre has previously been available in just one size, 7” by 70 ring gauge. This St. Paddy’s Day, smokers will have more choices, as three new sizes are added to the line: 5 x 50, 6 x 60 and 6 x 80. This limited release smoke will sell for $6.30 to $10.20 and ship in boxes of 30.
