The biggest news from the festival was that sales of Cuban cigars had grown by eight percent for 2013, with the value of the exports totally $447 million. This includes all 27 brands of cigars made by hand in Cuba and exported all over the world—except to the U.S., of course. While Europe remains the largest market for Cuban cigars, business is also booming in China and the Middle East.

The Cuban Cigar Festival made its debut in February 1999, and has grown into the world’s biggest celebration of premium cigars. The closest runner-up, The Big Smoke in Las Vegas, suffers in comparison due to the lack of Cuban cigars, thanks to the more than 50-year-old trade embargo.

Cigar & Spirits Magazine Hosts Tasting Event If reading about all the fun at the Cuban Cigar Festival has put you in the mood for trying some new drinks with your cigars, there’s something coming up you’ll want
to check out. The publication Cigars & Spirits will be hosting a very exciting event on May 23 in Newport Beach, California.

Restaurant owners, industry execs, chain store buyers and consumers will gather to sample over 50 award-winning spirits along with hors d’oeuvres and of course, premium cigars. Lincoln Salazar, chairman and publisher of Cigar & Spirits Magazine, described the concept. “This is no ordinary tasting event. This is a unique and upscale cigar and spirits extravaganza where vendors and consumers meet and mingle with many of the biggest names in the cigar and spirits industry, while sampling their premium products.”

Tickets are available now at presale price of $50, but the price goes up to $120 after March 15. Any tickets remaining will be $120 at the door. In addition to the sampling experience, guests will go home with hundreds of dollars worth of premium cigars and other goodies. Dominican Republic Hosts ProCigar Festival

Festival de Habano wasn’t the only event this month celebrating cigar culture, as the Dominican Republic was the site for the equally festive ProCigar tour. Starting February 16, more than 300 attendees gathered in Santiago to partake in delicious food, take part in a charity auction, and smoke a lot of Dominican cigars. Each day began with a tour of a tobacco field like those of La Canela or a cigar factory such as the huge Tabacalera de Garcia in La Romana, while the nights were filled with food, drink and music.

Cuba can claim worldwide bragging rights for the quality of its product, but the ProCigar organization points out that the Dominican Republic remains the “number one exporter of premium cigars in the world.”
