La Aurora Introduces Cigar to Honor Fernando León Asensio

ldfernando

What honors a legend most? How about naming a cigar in his honor? Fernando León Asensio of Aurora S.A. died in 2009, but his spirit lives on in a new cigar.

During his life, Asensio had his own personal cigar that he enjoyed and gave as gifts to chosen family and friends. Soon, the rest of us will be able to sample the Aurora patriarch’s special smoke, since his son Guillermo León is honoring dad with a new line named Fernando León.

The Fernando León line will come in five sizes: Corona (5 1/2 inches by 42 ring), Corona Gorda, (6 by 47), Robusto (5 by 50), Gran Toro (6 by 58), and Belicoso (6 1/4 by 52). A smooth blend of Peruvian, Dominican and Brazilian tobacco fills the
Dominican Corojo wrapper and binder.

The Fernando León will be introduced to the public at a dinner hosted by New York City’s Cigar Inn on October 23 and 24. This was the site of Fernando León Asensro’s first trip to the U.S. for a cigar related occasion, back in 1997.

Guillermo León, now the owner of La Aurora, explained the choice of location. “My father only shared the cigar with close friends and family. It is only fitting that we release the Fernando León at Cigar Inn. Ever since that event in 1997, Cigar Inn and its customers have always been an extended part of our family.”

Meet the Surrogates Skull Breaker from New Havana Cigars

Looking for a smoke with an attitude? Then the Skull Breaker is your kind of cigar!

From its dark, spooky band to its resemblance to a vintage rifle shell, the Surrogates Skull Breaker is the perfect cigar for a modern pirate—or aspiring outlaw biker. The least menacing thing about this cigar is the price, which is downright friendly at $7.50 for the 5.25 x 52 Belicoso.

Here’s what the NHC site has to say about the Skull Breaker: “Created to bring the excitement of a limited edition stick at a consumer-conscious price point and be readily available, these vitolas answer the question of whether to save it or smoke it with a blaring ‘Smoke it! Every day!’”

The NHC Surrogates line is crafted at the My Father Cigars factory in Nicaragua and blended by Tatuaje’s Pete Johnson.

Ron Kaufman’s Cigar Lounge a Big Hit at the RNC

ldap

While this year’s Republican National Convention in Tampa was dampened a bit by the threat of Hurricane Isaac, some delegates managed to have a good time anyway, especially the ones lucky enough to be admitted to Ron Kaufman’s Diamond Crown Cigar Lounge.

While Kaufman, a senior advisor to 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, had the honor of announcing the support of Massachusetts during the roll call, his favorite part of the convention was hosting the private party six floors above the crowded floor.

There, the most prominent GOP wheelers and dealers were treated to Maker’s Mark and a dozen brands of premium cigars while watching the convention’s speeches on a pair of television screens.

There have been no reports of naughty behavior occurring at the cozy, intimate lounge, but then, it was totally reporter-free.

London’s May Fair Hotel Opens Cigar Room

ldchairs

Weary travelers checking into London’s May Fair hotel have a new spot to relax and forget their jet lag, as the posh hostelry has added a lounge that is friendly to cigar lovers as well as non-smokers.

One look inside the Cigar Room shows that it reeks with atmosphere, from the swinging chairs and daybeds to the mesh chainmail walls, but the real attraction is the vast selection of premium cigars, accompanied by a bar loaded with top-shelf liquor.

Visitors who feel a bit overwhelmed by the choices can obtain advice from the staff of Cigar Sommeliers trained by Hunters & Frankau. As lead Somellier Sophia Christoforidou explained, “We have hunted far and wide to indulge our patrons with superior and exciting products. We have created a well-rounded experience with complementary tastes and flavors that will appeal to the aficionado as well as those seeking a new experience in a comfortable yet luxurious and stylish area.”
