To Rent or Not to Rent

If your favorite B&M has cigar lockers for rent, you should ask a few questions before committing to one. First, ask the owner whether you’re permitted to bring in cigars you purchased elsewhere. Don’t be surprised is the answer is “no,” since tobacco shops are in the business of selling you stuff, not just renting you storage space.

This is especially true if the shop has a smoking lounge on the premises. In most cases, the owner will not appreciate you lighting up a cigar you purchased at Cigars ‘R’ Us online or at a competing establishment.

Not all owners are fussy about things like this, but many are, so politely ask questions. And show your appreciation for the owners with relaxed policies by actually buying something occasionally. They’re more likely to overlook an outside smoke if you buy another cigar on your way in.

To sum it up, don’t be a bum. No shop owner wants to hear you bragging about the great deals you got on cigars by buying them online or from a competitor. He has bills to pay, so either spend a little money or smoke your cheap cigars at home.

Defective Merchandise

One unfortunate situation that may happen to you at some point is finding out that a cigar you purchased is defective. Maybe the draw is so tight that you can’t smoke it—what should you do?

Most B&M owners will replace defective merchandise or offer you a discount on the item. If the owner gets all huffy and refuses to acknowledge the problem, maybe you should be shopping someplace else.

On the other hand, be sure to thank the owner who accommodates you. A smart businessperson knows how to keep the customers satisfied.

Smell the Jars?

If your B&M has jars of loose pipe tobacco on the counter, you may wonder if it’s OK to open the jars and smell the tobacco. In most cases, yes, but it’s always a good idea to ask the clerk beforehand. It’s not OK to open bags of tobacco—that’s why the jars are there.

When you find the right B&M, it can become your favorite hangout, your home away from home. Just mind your manners!
