lileadIn the news this week is a new destination for cigar buyers, bad news for smokers in one city and one lawyer who’s in serious trouble over his love for Cuban cigars—and the money you can make smuggling them. Also, the proposed FDA regulation of premium cigars is still in the news, along with the way one maker is fighting back.

Corona Fights FDA Regulation with “House Resolution” Cigar

We’re all waiting to see what steps the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will take to regulate premium cigars, but the folks behind one famous name are doing something the raise awareness about the issue.

Two legislators from the cigar-making state of Florida, Sen. Bill Nelson (D.) and Rep. Bill Posey (R.) have introduced a bill that would exempt fine hand-rolled cigars from FDA regulations.

To promote the need for congressional action, the Corona Cigar Co. in Orlando has introduced a special edition smoke called the “House Resolution by JC Newman.” The varieties of cigars are named “Speaker” (torpedo), “Chairman (Churchill) and “Whip” (robusto). Included in each box is a cutter and an informational insert on the bills now pending in the House and Senate.

All House Resolution cigars are handmade in the Newman factory in Nicaragua with a medium-bodied blend of Cuban-seed, long-filler tobacco that is grown in Nicaragua, all wrapped in sungrown brown San Andres maduro.

A box of 20 House Resolution Chairman, Speaker or Whip Maduros sells for $79.95 at A five-pack is $37.50.

Will Cigars Play a Part in This Year’s Election?

The 2012 presidential election is just over two months away, and there are many issues for the voters to think about. For cigar smokers, one of them is the rumored new set of regulations coming from the Food and Drug Administration that could have a chilling effect on how premium cigars are sold.

While all regulations on the sales of tobacco are purportedly aimed at preventing minors from buying the products, the new laws being considered could drastically alter how premium cigars are sold to the adults who purchase them, causing possible drops in sales. More restrictive regulations could also result in the loss of jobs, the last thing we need right now.

The roll-your-own cigarette industry has already been decimated, causing business owners who invested in the rolling machines to shutter their stores and be stuck with hardware nobody wants to buy.

If the FDA chooses to ban mail-order sales of cigars, that could result in more lost jobs among the 85,000 Americans currently working in the premium cigar industry. Possible regulations from the FDA could prove especially damaging in the cigar-friendly state of Florida.

Florida is considered a “swing state” in this election, and as in 2000, the outcome
could depend on which way the state’s voters lean. That’s why we’re not likely to see any real action from the FDA before November. Who wants to risk losing all those potential votes?
