The Robb Report has named the Gurkha Black Dragon as the Best of the Best
in Cigars for 2008.
This year's best of the best cigar-tasting event took place at the Shave of
Beverly Hills, a modern echo of the elegant tonsorial parlors of Old Bond
Street. Our panel of 11 cigar smokers gathered on a cool spring evening,
settling into plush antique leather barber chairs while muted strains of Miles
Davis and Thelonious Monk played in the background.
The 10 finalists were exceptional, even among the numerous premium cigars
introduced since the last Best of the Best competition. As always, the tasting
was blind—our hosts replaced the band from each cigar with a numbered white
paper strip. Panelists used cedar matches and butane lighters, as fluid lighters
and chemical-laden cardboard matches can taint tobacco flavors. Though milk is a
commonly used neutralizer of the nicotine taste that lingers from cigar to
cigar, our panelists opted for other cigar-friendly libations from the Shave's
wet bar.

A peaty and leathery cigar from Gurkha, the Black Dragon is an exclusive
Honduran blend made from select fillers, which create a rich cigar with a medium
body.
The Black Dragon story began in 2006 when it hit the market with the hefty price
tag of $1,150.00 per cigar, the most expensive cigar ever made. Only 5
hand-carved camel bone boxes of 100 cigars were produced, making this stick
very, very limited. The blend included extremely old and rare tobaccos collected
from all corners of the world. To make the Black Dragon more accessible to cigar
enthusiasts throughout the world, a new version was recently released in 2007.
This new blend has a similar flavor and uses similar tobaccos, but does not cost
nearly as much as its predecessor. Notes of earth and leather are strongly
noticeable and combine nicely with a medium body that has some kick, but is not
overwhelmingly powerful. Like all Gurkhas, the new Black Dragon comes packaged
in extremely attractive boxes, making them look almost as good as they taste.
The Black Dragon is another fine addition to the Gurkha portfolio and one that
is also highly recommended.
