The New Year is just a few days old, but some of our favorite famous cigar lovers are already making the news. On the bright side, we have new smokes to try, but there’s also bad news from not-so-jolly old England, where cigar smokers are becoming an endangered species!

“Sons of Anarchy” Cigars and Accessories on Sale Now

Fans of the FX cable TV drama “Sons of Anarchy” are still mourning the death of the lovely but doomed Tara, who probably should have had better sense than to get mixed up with a biker gang in the first place. Fortunately, they have a bunch of new products related to the show to cheer them up. In addition to the “Sons of Anarchy” Limited Edition Professional Poker Set, “Sons of Anarchy” Dartboard and Dartboard Cabinet, you can pick up the “Sons of Anarchy” cigars and accessories.

The SOA cigars from the makers of Black Crown are hand crafted from a rich, full-bodied blend of aged Cuban seed filler from Nicaragua encased in an extra-fermented Ecuadorian Oscuro wrapper. The taste is marked by notes of leather, wood, sweetness, spice and hearty tobacco for a smooth, silky smoke. Cigars are available for $5.50 up at

Also available at are the SOA pewter ashtray for $39.95, the desktop humidor holding up to 75 cigars for $124.95, the leather saddle humidor for $149.95, the three-finger case for $39.95 and the X4 cutter for $39.95. All bear the unique “Sons of Anarchy” trademark Grim Reaper artwork, plus the humidors come well equipped with hygrometer, humidifier and cedar dividers.

Michael Jordan’s Cigar Haven Gets a Price Drop

If you’ve just won the lottery and are looking for a cool new crib, former NBA player Michael Jordan has a deal for you. The basketball legend and cigar aficionado, who is currently expecting identical twin girls with new wife Yvette Prieto, has dropped the price on his lavish Chicago mansion from the $29 million he was asking in 2012 to a mere $13 million today. The posh 56,000-square-foot palace, which sits on seven acres of land, includes nine bedrooms, 29 bathrooms, a pool parlor, a basketball court, and of course, a cigar room. For now, Jordan and his gorgeous Cuban-American model bride are awaiting their pair of blessed events in their 11-bedroom, 28,000-square-foot digs in Jupiter, Florida. The couple is keeping mum on when they’ll actually be handing out those pink-banded cigars. This cigar lover is obviously living the good life!

Dennis Rodman Blows His Stack

Another cigar lover and former NBA champ is in the news this week, but not in such a happy way. Dennis Rodman has never been known for his calm, even disposition, but during his recent interview with CNN’s Chris Cuomo, the basketballer totally lost his cool when questioned about his latest trip to North Korea. It seems that Rodman took a few of his NBA pals over there to play basketball for the dictator’s birthday, but all the “New Day” host wanted to talk about was politics. Rodman gestured angrily with his cigar as he stated, “This is not about me. If I can open the door a little bit, just a little bit. It’s all about the game. People love to do one thing - sports.” Maybe so, but palling around with violent dictators like Kim Jong-un is certain to cause controversy.

Boston Bans Smoking in Public Parks

Alas, the number of places where one can enjoy a cigar in public just got smaller, as Boston joined the list of cities that no longer allow smoking in public parks. The new law bans the smoking of cigarettes, cigars, marijuana and any other “lighted or vaporized” substances in parks run by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. Smoking scofflaws can be fined $250.

Is Cigar Smoking Dying Out in Britain?

As if the news of new smoking bans and the threat of FDA regulations weren’t depressing enough, now a study shows that cigar smoking in Britain has declined so drastically that the habit could disappear from the isles altogether in another decade.

According to the Financial Times, cigar smoking in the UK has dropped by four-fifths over the last 20 years, mostly due to smoking bans in the workplace, anti-tobacco campaigns and rising duty rates on tobacco products. Figures from HM Revenue & Customs show that Brits bought 2.1 million kg of cigars in 1992 but only 0.4 million kg in 2013.

Simon Evans of the UK’s Imperial Tobacco told the Financial Times that the number of regular cigar smokers in the country had fallen from about 700,000 ten years ago to just 300,000 today. Evans blames the stodgy image of cigars for the lack of younger smokers, saying, “They see them as something their dad or grandad would smoke.”

As bleak as the outlook would seem to be for smokers across the pond, sales of both cheap small cigars and the priciest premium sticks are holding stable.
