smokingpic1 To continue where we left off last time, today we will discuss more smoking news in part 2 of this April edition. Among today's topics are some possible changes in smoking legislation, as well as some unfortunate deaths amongst members of the cigar industry.

Cigars Gaining Popularity in South Africa

When the FIFA World Cup takes center stage this June 11th, the focus of the world will undoubtedly be upon South Africa for the huge event. The African nation can also expect scores of visitors from around the world. Those visitors who also happen to be cigar fans may feel especially welcome, considering that the country is seeing a rise in popularity when it comes to smoking stogies.

At the heart of the cigar boom in South Africa are many young professionals. Since they have the discretionary income to afford such luxuries, many are partaking in cigar smoking as a new hobby and as a way to enjoy the fruits of their labor.

Another reason for the climb in South African cigar smoking is tough legislation that bans smoking in public places. If one wishes to have a cigar bar or a smoking club, they must purchase a special license. While these tough laws would make one think that smoking would be curtailed, it actually has had the opposite effect when it comes to cigars. Cigars are seen as a more exclusive product than regular cigarettes, and one that involves a special experience and ambience. With this in mind, many see cigar smoking as something special that they want to be a part of, and it is now seen as the “in” thing to do, especially if they can afford it. Young professionals are not the only ones aiding in the sale of cigars either, since many women are now turning to flavored cigars as a diversion.

This boom in cigar popularity within South Africa should definitely add some extra flair to those aficionados visiting the country this summer for FIFA's World Cup, as they will not only be able to enjoy the sport they love, but also the hobby they love too.
