cig It's time to get caught up on what has been going on in the cigar world in terms of current events and news. In today's edition of smoking news for July, we will take a look at some tax breaks in California, a campaign being put together to “smoke the vote,” some tax-free news on the upcoming IPCPR show, and a contest from one cigar company that can pad your wallet.

A Possible Sigh of Relief for Cigar Smokers in California

If you live in California, you might see some discounts on cigars coming your way. In rare form, the state of California has actually decided to lower cigar taxes. No, that is not a typo. Despite all of the smoking bans, tax hikes, and other happenings against the tobacco industry as of late, California has decided to not follow the crowd.

Effective July 1, 2010, the California state surtax on other tobacco products, commonly referred to as OTP, has dropped from its previous rate of 41 percent to 33 percent. Distributors are the ones that are responsible for paying the surtax, and part of the revenues collected go towards educational programs about tobacco products and their effects on a person's health. The state's Board of Equalization is responsible for the drop, as they voted on the reduction. The numbers are not picked out of the sky. Instead, the board uses data released by the Tobacco Merchants Association on the wholesale premium cigarette price to get an exact figure.

This drop in the surtax does not necessarily mean that cigar buyers will see lower prices. Of course, to be more competitive, distributors may decide to pass on their savings down the line. In the end, such a move could mean less money out of the pockets of consumers when buying their favorite cigars. Regardless, this is positive news, especially when you consider how huge the California market is to the cigar industry.
