Pennsylvania Remains Tax-free

paseal

Finally, some good news for the cigar industry with regards to taxes! With all the increasing taxes across the nation, implementations of bans, and more, it is nice to know that the state of Pennsylvania has decided to not follow the crowd.

Governor Ed Rendell recently proposed a 30 percent OTP tax as part of a $28 billion state budget. Currently, Pennsylvania has a budget deficit of approximately $1.2 billion, and an OTP tax was seen as a way to help clean it up. His proposal was rejected, however, and it allows Pennsylvania to keep its status of just one of two states that does not tax cigars. Florida is the other. Pennsylvania also can keeps its claim to being the only state to not tax snuff and smokeless tobacco, making it a haven for fans of such products.

Apparently, Governor Rendell is not a fan of cigars, or he at least sees them as an easy target for budgetary help through tax revenue. Although Pennsylvania has a longstanding history of being tax-free on cigars, Rendell proposed a first-ever tax on the products last year, which was also denied. Hopefully, the state's lawmakers will continue to reject such tax proposals in the future to keep Pennsylvania tobacco-friendly.

There are many more happenings in the cigar industry, so make sure to come back as we report them.
