This week, we have several new places to enjoy a cigar and a drink, including one just for world travelers. Plus, the nation’s current number one college team shows how they celebrate in style!

‘Bama Players Carry on Winning Tradition with Victory Cigars

Alabama’s Crimson Tide has been rolling over its opponents as they seek a second consecutive BCS championship, so it’s only natural that the players would be ready to kick back and relax after a big victory. When the team enjoyed their cigars in the locker room after beating rival Tennessee, they were carrying on a time-honored tradition.

The Alabama-Tennessee game is known as The Third Saturday in October, and the SEC rivalry has been going on for decades. Back in the 1950s, Alabama’s head trainer Jim Goostree began handing out cigars after a victory over Tennessee. For years, both teams carried on the tradition in secret to slip under the radar of the NCAA.

Last Saturday, the Tide defeated the Vols 44-13, and the victorious ‘Bama team celebrated with post-game cigars. That’s one tradition worth carrying on!

R&R Cigars is a Haven in Tuscaloosa

Whatever team you root for, it’s always great to find a hospitable place to smoke a cigar and hang out with other lovers of fine tobacco. That’s why if you happen to be in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to cheer on the Tide or one of their opponents, R&R Cigars is the place to check out.

Owners Reagan Starner and his dad Randy opened the shop in January on the college town’s main drag, University Boulevard, and it has something for every smoker. There’s a sports room, of course, with three TV screens, but there’s also a conference room for poker games and checking your laptop, plus a movie room with a 60-inch TV. The patio in the rear of the store is perfect for socializing, with a grill and fire pit.

The Starners planned for their store to be a friendly sort of place, as Reagan told a reporter, “If you just want cigars, there are other places you can get them, but for interaction, you come to a cigar shop like this one.”

R&R Cigars is located at 2730 University Blvd., Tuscaloosa, AL 35401, 205-722-2741.

A Final Cigar Bash in Carlsbad

November 2 will be a sad day for smokers in Carlsbad, CA, because that’s when a new ban on smoking at the outdoor patios of the city’s eating establishments will go into effect.

The Cigar Grotto is planning a fond farewell to cigar parties with a big bash at Hennessey’s Tavern on November 1. Guests will enjoy a 16-ounce steak with sides and a pint of ale, plus a fine cigar.

Cigar Grotto co-owner DeeDee Engels is shocked by the city’s decision, and told a reporter, “We have been hosting cigar socials on the third Thursday of the month for 11 years at (the) Carlsbad Hennessey’s.” She feels, “It’s a slap in the face to all these particular business owners that have brought so much life, ambience, traffic and revenue to the city.”

Engels and her husband Gregg will continue to have their cigar socials in the nearby cities that still allow smoking on outdoor patios—at least, as long as those don’t also vote for bans.

Tickets to the “Eve of the Ban on Smoking in Carlsbad” Cigar Social are $59.95 each. For more information, call the Cigar Grotto at 760-722-1602.
