da vincidan tobacco

davinci1Tonight, I’ve decided to sit back and have a nice little aromatic.  A while back I gave a review of Dan’s Da Vinci.  About 6 months ago, I decided to start reviewing tobaccos and keep a log of my reviews and then down the road, review it again and see how my tastes and the tobacco has changed.

I figured this would be as good a time as ever to review this blend again.  Plus, I really needed something to write!  I’m going to start this with most of the previous review and then we’ll get down to business.

I really wanted to hate this blend. I gave it one heckuva shot too and almost succeeded in hating it. If I had stopped when I wanted to, I would have ended up hating it and calling it another aromatic travesty.

The aroma of this stuff is absolutely wonderful in an aromatic way. Don't smell much tobacco. Well, smoking it, you don't taste much tobacco either but the flavors make up for that. I smell vanillas and I can smell the wine that it's cased with. It's one of those soft comforting aromas.

Light it up and I start tasting vanillas. Yeah, I guess if I really concentrate, the virginia sweetness comes through just a touch. However, there's that bitter flavor that I hated in Pete's Irish Whiskey. Could this be the alcohol burning that I don't like? I've tasted rums in blends and it didn't give me that bitterness. It's the only thing I can think of. Anyway, I almost dumped this bowl but after the sage advice of a BOTL I respect on this site I decided to continue with it. I decided not to judge too quickly. Well, I had let it go out since I was going to dump it but picked it back up and relit. All of the sudden, the bitterness smoothed out and I could taste and smell the Tuscan red wine. It was fleeting but there.

I ended up smoking the rest of the bowl rather quickly trying to get more of that flavor. The bowl was getting pretty hot and I finally realized I couldn't light ash and had to give up. Great thing about it was that it didn't bite even a little bit.

That day I smoked in a small straight Dr. Grabow.  Tonight, I’ve decided to go with my Peterson Kilarney 221.  This was my second pipe ever and I’ve dedicated it to aromatics.  Mainly just the look of the pipe and the fact that I like to smoke it in public is why I dedicated it to aromatics.  Of course, that was when I actually cared what people thought of the aromas of my pipe smoke!
