fiji1Following an extensive renovation project, Fiji’s palm-tree lined Dolphin Island has been re-launched, and the 13-acre private retreat is welcoming jet-setters back to paradise once more... Famous for its turquoise waters and whispering Palms, the Pacific private Island has been a favourite among travellers looking for a place to dream and relax. After a bit of a face-lift, Dolphin Island is ready to re-open its arms to globe-trotters looking for a piece of paradise, and begin lavishing travellers in its tropical embrace once more. Part of the Huka Retreat brand, it’s one of three sister properties across Fiji, New Zealand and South Africa that specialise in exotic escapism across some of the world’s most stunning private resorts. The vision of owner and entrepreneur Alex van Heeren, the island now boasts a magnificent new facade and offers a maximum of eight guests the ultimate private Pacific island experience, on an exclusive-use basis.

With finishing touches by renowned interior designer Virginia Fisher, the new-look Dolphin Island is a lush, ambient, extraordinary place to escape.  Located just 20 minutes from the shores of Viti Levu, guests arrive at the island by private boat where they are immediately greeted by the beautiful, luxurious accommodation awaiting them.

The main bure - the big, beautiful place where you sleep - is a hub of rest, relaxation and fun under a fabulous, traditional palm-thatched roof.  Flanked by two picturesque, symmetrical guest suites, this group of buildings provide the main block of accommodation and the focal point of the island.

The suites are the perfect place to live out dreams of a tropical lifestyle, with their heart timber floors, plaster walls, stone tiles, wooden shutters, high ceilings and state-of-the-art air conditioning. Inspired by the lush green landscape and decorated in sea blues and coconut browns, every aspect of the bure’s design complements and enhances the stunning backdrop of Dolphin Island. Every level of guest comfort has been considered from thirsty beach towels to perfumed candles – and the total effect is utter magic.

For the ultimate romantic getaway, there’s also a hill-top sleep-out bure - a rustic yet refined thatched, open-air bedroom full of fluttering linen, which makes for a dreamy, candle-filled night-time retreat. The Huka Retreats famed attention to detail is strongly evident within this haven of relaxation and romance, which looks out across the white sands and rolling seas of Dolphin Island.

The large, generous dressing rooms open up into well-appointed bathrooms full of romance, with twin hand basins, stunning showers, a gorgeous sculptural free-standing bath and fresh sea-coral mirrors to boot. And if you don’t want to be restricted by the walls of the bure, you can break out and indulge in the ultimate outdoor tropical shower experience in your very own private garden courtyard. Back in the bedroom, fine, pure cotton bed linen and soft feather pillows provide the perfect place to snooze, as well as a soft, cool space to escape the heat.

A series of poolside areas have been carefully arranged around the bure so guests can while away the hazy afternoons drying off on their pristine, sand-coloured day-beds after a dip in the pool, or indulging in a bit of al fresco dining with a cocktail and a pool-side view. You can even head down the pontoon for a seafood dinner with a sea-view as you look out across the rolling hills of Fiji. Casual groups of plantation-style chairs, palm-tree tables and soft feather-filled sofas beckon guests to relax as one day draws seamlessly into the next. And in the evening, as the last rays of the sun catch on the tips of the palm trees and sink into the ocean, the open veranda, with its wide, folding doors offers the perfect venue for a tropical cocktail or a glass or two of chilled wine.
