bmw1Cruising down the highway in a convertible beamer with your favourite tunes blasting out from a world-class speaker system? Yes please! Thanks to BMW’s collaboration with luxury audio brand Bang and Olufsen, that’s exactly what drivers can now expect as part of the BMW experience.
The well known brands have teamed up to create a high-end surround sound system for the 2012 BMW6 Series Convertible.  The fruits of the pair’s very first joint venture have recently been revealed, but as it won’t be available in dealer showrooms till late Autumn, we thought we’d give you a glimpse of what’s coming your way...

High-end Sound Meets High-end technology

If you look inside the latest BMW6 Series Convertible, you’ll find a grand total of 12 active loudspeakers driven by 1,000 watts of raw, sound-blasting power. It promises to deliver a rich, convincing sound of the kind expected by all fans of Bang & Olufsen’s existing audio treasures. Each of the five tweeters is paired with a mid-range loudspeaker to deliver a homogeneous loudspeaker set-up, while the two potent subwoofers located under the front seats are directly mounted to the body of the car. This BMW-patented design eliminates vibrations from the subwoofers to produce an even cleaner, even more spectacular sound performance.

The 6 Series speaker system also features Bang & Olufsen’s patented Acoustic Lens Technology, which distributes sound horizontally across 180 degrees of dispersion, so it’s literally like basking in a horizon of warm, sunny sounds. The Acoustic Lens system is designed to give the best possible acoustic experience from anywhere in front of the speaker. On closer inspection, you’ll also find that the acoustic lens cover reveals an additional mid-range loudspeaker. This extra audio point helps to deliver perfectly balanced sound throughout the entire cabin, so you’ll feel like you’ve died and gone to audio heaven - just remember to keep your eyes on the road while you’re lapping it up!

Weather-Proof Music

One of the most impressive features of Bang & Olufsen’s spectacular sound system is its ability to adjust the quality of the sound according to conditions outside the car. The Dynamic Sound Optimization feature incorporated within the new system monitors things like the weather, the sound of the rain, and changing road surfaces, to make sure the sound in your car isn’t affected by the noise going on outside.

Inside the BMW 6 Series’ special audio system there’s also an extra sensor which automatically sends instructions to a part called the Digital Signal Processor. This bit monitors the changes in sound inside the cabin of the car, such as the quality of the noise when you’re cruising with the top down, or the change in sound when you put it back up to keep warm. The Digital Signal Processor then responds to these changes and alters the sound to achieve optimum audio in each situation. This means you’ve got perfect, personalised audio for your entire journey, without having to lift a finger - it’s almost like having your very own personal sound engineer tucked in the boot!

Sculpting Your Own Space

In addition to maintaining perfect sound, there’s also two distinct sound modes integrated into the brand new system, so you can pick from two totally different sound experiences depending on your music and your mood. The first option is Studio Mode, which is designed to produce a wonderfully vibrant sound stage, as close as possible to the kind of sound the artist intended you to hear. The second option is the new Expanded Mode, which widens the sound stage to give passengers the impression that they are in a much larger space - great for that festival feel when you’re listening to a live recording.
