Determining the quantity you’ll need

Perhaps the most important factor to consider when using humidification beads is quantity.  If you have a humidor or coolidor at home, for instance, what quantity of humidification beads would you need for it to function properly?  Here are some basic rules of thumb that you can follow:

First, you’ll need to know the cubic feet of your container (humidor).  You get this number by multiplying the depth, width, and height of the container.  For example, if your humidor is 12 inches deep, 18 inches wide, and 24 inches tall, multiplying the three would give you 5,184 cubic inches.  Dividing this number by 1,728 (cubic inches per cubic foot) equals 3 cubic feet.

Now, the standard rule says that for every 5 cubic feet, you’ll need 1 pound of humidification beads.  So, take the 3 cubic feet and divide it by 5.  This calculation shows that you will need 0.6 pounds of humidification beads for this specific humidor size.

Beyond calculating the quantity of beads needed as shown above, here are some other basic quantities that you can use for different containers:

Humidors: 50ct desktop humidor = 1 ounce of beads

100ct desktop humidor = 2 ounces of beads

150ct desktop humidor = 3 ounces of beads

Coolidors: 1/3 pound of humidification beads per 50 quarts.  So, if you had a 150-quart coolidor, you would need 1 pound of beads.

Bead placement

When placing beads in your humidor or coolidor, you want to spread them out so that their surface area is maximized.  Keep them stacked no greater than one inch deep.  As for what you can place them in, you can use stockings, a drawstring filter bag (like the one shown above from Heartfelt Industries), a small container with holes in the lid, a small bowl/dish, a shot glass, etc.
