Over the last few weeks, we’ve been looking at what a cigar beginner needs to know, including last week’s article on how to mind your manners when you visit the local brick-and-mortar tobacco emporium.

Alas, it’s been brought to our attention that there’s another place where some cigar lovers may need some reminders, tips or guidance....and that is—cigar forms.

That’s why this week’s column is about the finer points of cigar forum etiquette. First of all, everyone is welcome at the community. We all share a love of fine cigars, or any cigars as well as pipe tobaccos so that gives us something in common. There’s room here for more than one opinion on any subject, so try to be nice to your fellow members.

If you’re new to our forums, there are several threads that can give you a quick look at the ground rules. Check them out before you get going. Also take a look at the “stickied” threads, and pay attention to the board FAQ, terms of agreement and general rules. You don’t want to get banned before you’ve had time to make any new friends, do you?

Also, read some of the older threads before diving in. This will give you a chance to get the “feel” of the forums as well as learning a bit about the “old” members.

The next subject up for discussion is duplicate threads. It only takes a little time to search whether there’s already an existing thread on a subject before opening a new one. However, if a newbie does initiate a thread on a subject that has been covered already, it’s not up to you to tell him, “USE the SEARCH” function. Nobody died and made you the forum police, so when you remind a member of that rule be polite—even to newbies.

As if you haven’t noticed, Cuban cigars are illegal in the U.S., they’ve been illegal for more than 50 years and nobody knows whether they’ll ever be legal here again. Since possession of any Cuban cigars other than the pre-embargo variety can land you in jail, the forums here are not the proper place to discuss where you can buy them illegally.  If you happen to live outside the U.S. in a country where trade with Cuba is legal, good for you and yes we are jealous—but you’re still not allowed to discuss how and where to purchase Cuban cigars.

Stay on subject, since there’s already plenty to talk about while keeping to the subjects of cigars, pipes and smoking accessories. Do not derail threads with posts on subjects that don’t belong there. Polite discussion on subjects like music, sports and travel are permitted on the “Non Cigar Related Specialty Forums.”

A cigar forum is not the place for political debates, so take them someplace else. While there are subjects of interest to cigar smokers that have a political connection, like the Cuban trade embargo and local regulations on tobacco, a forum devoted to cigars is not the place to air your opinions on whether the current POTUS was born in this country or if his predecessor should be tried for treason. If it’s not about cigars, we don’t want to hear about it, so lay off religious posts, too. And no profanity, OK?
