Welcome back to the third installment of the Ultimate Cigar Glossary, where we take a peek inside the lingo and terminology used in the cigar industry – and in your living room – to get a better understand about our most favorite of topics – the cigar.
So far we have covered, in great exhaustion, the letters A through C (and even touched upon a number or two!). The terms we showcased in the last issue were: Cabinet Selection, Cameroon, Candela, Canoeing, Cap, Capa, Carotene, Casing, Cedar, Chavetta, Cheroot, Churchill, Cigar Bar, Cigar Drill, Cigarillo, Claro, Clear Havana, Cohiba, Color, Color, Connecticut, Consistency, Corojos, Corona, Cuban Seeding, Cubatabaco, Culebra, Curing, and Cutters.
There’s still a lot more ground to cover, so let’s give it a whirl. We start with the letter D:
Debudding: Tobacco plants, if left to their own devices, will expend their energy towards their flower buds, resulting in smaller leaves. To ensure the plant grows bigger, lusher leaves, farmers nip these upper buds in a process known as debudding, causing the plant to focus its energies on the leaves instead of the buds.
Diademas: An eight inch long, cigar with a tapered head. You may find the foot to be open or closed, depending upon the cigar.
Double Claro: This is another name for the Candela.
Double Corona: A cigar that is between 7 ½ to 8 inches long with a ring gauge between 49 and 52. Also commonly known as the Prominente.
Draw: The draw, technically speaking, is the quantity of air that is pulled through your cigar when you puff on it. Hot means it is to easy to draw, and plugged means it is too difficult.
