If you are wondering what the difference is between all the different types of cigar wrappers out there, this guide will help to bring you up to speed.

Are you new to cigar smoking?  If so, you are probably curious about many things regarding these wonderful products, with their wrappers being one of them.  Even if you have never smoked a cigar before, it is highly likely that you have seen cigars with completely different appearances simply due to the colors of their wrappers.  With that being said, is appearance the only difference, or can you actually receive a different smoking experience according to the wrapper?  Of course you can, and that is the beauty of cigar wrappers.

Some people believe that the color of a cigar’s wrapper will tell you what type of flavors to expect.  This can be true, but you really cannot generalize too much.  For example, some erroneously believe that just because a wrapper is darker, a cigar will have a stronger flavor profile.  This is not true, as there are obviously exceptions.  Just look at some Connecticut-wrapped cigars.  While they may have lighter colored wrappers that could insinuate a smoother smoking experience, they can actually be stronger than some Maduros with very dark wrappers.

So, to clear it all up for you, we will break down several of the major wrapper shades on the market according to their color and give a glimpse into what each has to offer.  You can then take that information and shop accordingly to get a smoking experience that fits your preferences.

Different Cigar Wrappers

Lighter Shades

Candela

This shade of wrapper isn’t exactly common, but you will find some out there.  The Candela sometimes carries the Double Claro name.  Perhaps its most unique feature is that it carries a bit of a light green tint.  This tint comes from the chlorophyll content of the leaves.  The chlorophyll is maintained due to the fact that Candela wrappers often have their leaves picked before the plant reaches full maturity.

Candela wrappers often have a leafy aroma (no surprise here).  As for their flavor, they can sometimes offer cedar, grass, pepper, and sweet notes.  Candela wrappers usually offer a smooth smoke with mild or medium-bodied strength.
