Darker Shades

Rosado

The Spanish name for these wrappers refers to their reddish color.  Rosado leaves are not too common since they are difficult to grow in other regions of the world outside of Cuba.  They are in high demand, however.  You can expect a spicy experience when smoking a cigar with a Rosado wrapper, as well as a handful of notes such as earth, coffee, and cedar.

Cameroon

These wrappers originate from the African country with the same name.  Rich and smooth in nature, Cameroon-wrapped cigars can offer notes of black pepper, butter, toast, and leather.

Maduro

Spanish for “mature” or “ripe,” this category of leaves is quite dark.  They undergo an aging process that can take years and that often translates into a ton of flavor.  Their sweet nature makes Maduro cigars a favorite after-dinner treat, and some of the notes you can expect include black pepper, brown sugar, cherry, coffee, caramel, dark chocolate, dried fruit, and molasses.

Oscuro

Spanish for “dark,” these wrappers stay true to their name as they are the darkest of the bunch.  Their flavor can sometimes mimic that of Maduro leaves, although they’re usually richer, sweeter, and a bit stronger.

That just about does it for this look at cigar wrappers.  Hopefully you have a better understanding of the differences between each so the next time you shop won’t be so overwhelming.

Is there a particular cigar wrapper that you love?  Are you a Connecticut fan, or do you prefer Maduro-wrapped cigars, or Cameroon, Rosado, etc.?  Feel free to chime in with other cigar smokers on this topic by visiting Puff.com’s forums.  The General Cigar Discussion board is a good place to do this.  While there you can also do a search to find threads posted on any particular wrapper or cigar to find out more info.
