watchimage1With haute horologists around the world creating a wealth of watches from whimsical wrist-wear to contemporary chronometers, we’ve put together a selection of the summer’s most tantalising timepieces to help you stay ahead of the crowd.

Frederique Constant’s Vintage Racing Collection

Official Timekeeper of the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge Frederique Constant has released three limited edition timepieces inspired by the classic racing cars driven in the 9,000 mile, trans-continental rally. Capturing the vintage aesthetic of the classic motors, the watches have each been equipped with hand-polished, stainless steel cases and real leather straps. Owners can choose whether to have the watch’s silver dial decorated with either blackened steel or rose-gold plated indexes and hands. There’s also a sportier version of the watch which comes with black chronograph counters and a black outer-ring, as well as the high-tech Vintage Racing Automatic Chrono - a mechanically self-winding chronograph beating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The mechanism is visible through the transparent case-back which shows the special rotor engraved with the Peking to Paris logo. Each version is limited to 1888 pieces, and comes with a commemorative plate showing the route driven by the Peking to Paris participants of 2011.

Romain Jackson’s Space Invaders Watch

Daring, imaginative and extremely creative, Romain Jackson’s latest watch is inspired by the cult 80s game Space Invaders. The tiny extra-terrestrial characters have literally invaded the dial of the limited edition watch, which is made from steel combined with fragments of Apollo 11. Available in both a day-time version and a luminous night-time option, the out-of-this-world watch is designed to evoke all aspects of the extra-terrestrial.  Its fully-functioning ball-and-socket joints symbolize the pivoting feet of American space shuttles, and the security screws are stamped with four signature Space Invaders cups. It can be adjusted to fit any wrist size, and to make it even more personal, the plate on the back is made from moon silver - a material which the manufacturers say incorporates moon rocks and interacts on an inter-molecular level with the wearer of the watch.

The BR 01 Airborne II and BR 01 Tourbillon Airborne

These two limited edition watches by Bell and Ross are the latest versions of the BR Airborne model launched in 2009. Inspired by the dangerous role of military paratroopers in World War Two, the collection features the skull and crossbones image adopted by young paratroopers. The image was selected to symbolise both their courage and defiance in the face of death, as well as their ultimate vulnerability during each mission. Also used as a talisman to intimidate their enemies, the symbol has been recreated using bezels and screws on the watch face, so owners can intimidate a few enemies of their own - or perhaps just make a few friends jealous instead.

Both limited edition models have the brand’s signature case, sword-shaped hands, and a symbolic ‘phantom black’ dial. The BR 01 Airborne II is made from aged steel which has been rubbed repeatedly to create an antique look, while the BR 01 Tourbillon Airborn is made from a light-weight titanium. The latter also has four additional features: a tourbillion, a precision indicator, a regulator and a power reserve indicator. It also has a mechanism which compensates for the measuring difference caused by the Earth’s gravity when your wrists rotate or accelerate, making this one unbelievably precise second-counter. With anti-reflective sapphire to cover the face and up to 100 meters water resistance, these watches are both highly sophisticated and extremely tough - just like the men who’ll be wearing them!
