Whether you are completely new to cigar smoking or just want a refresher, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind whenever you are getting ready to light up a stogie.

If you’ve ever felt “intimidated” when smoking a cigar in public, you are probably not alone. This is especially true for beginners.  You don’t want to seem like a total newbie, and you would like to be able to enjoy your cigar without any interruptions or arguments from others.  So, to help you out, here are some tips on everyday cigar manners.  Some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.  They don’t apply to any one particular place like a cigar store.  Rather, you can practice them in public or in the comfort of your own home.

How should I smoke around other people?

It’s no secret that the anti-smoking movement has gained ground.  Depending on where you live, you might find it hard to find places that allow you to light up and enjoy your cigar amongst the company of others.  If you are in a smoking-friendly place, you still might want to ask those directly next to you if they mind.  Just as a courtesy.

Of course, you may come across some rude anti-smokers that will tell you that they do mind, but if it’s a designated smoking area, stand your ground.  Just try to not get into a fistfight over it.  A smoking area means you can smoke, so if they have a problem with that then they should move to a non-smoking area.

What do I do with the cigar band?

As with many things in cigar smoking, band “etiquette” is one where opinions seem to differ.  Many cigars come with decorative bands that not only help to identify the cigar, but also give it some pizzazz in the looks department.  Some companies really knock their band designs out of the park, such as CAO.  So, if the band is there to help identify the cigar you are smoking, is it really necessary to keep it on?  No, but in the end the choice is up to you.

Some people feel that if you leave a cigar band on, especially if it’s of an expensive cigar, that you are essentially showing off.  The reply to this is, “who cares?”  It’s your cigar, you paid for it, so show it off if you wish to do so.  Besides, you may run across another cigar smoker who’s interested in what you are sampling and the band could be a good conversation starter.

That isn't all you need to know either.  The next page has some great tips to help you mind your cigar manners.
