lacigsLos Angeles is not the most cigar-friendly city in the world. Even cigarette smokers have to be careful where they light up, as new regulations are being passed constantly. Last week, Kid Rock was vilified for lighting up a cigar at a smoke-free Travis Tritt concert in Detroit—in SoCal, he would probably have been dragged out by the cops and thrown in jail. It’s not always easy to find a place to relax with your favorite cigar in smoker-unfriendly Los Angeles, but we found several hot spots round town that specialize in making cigar aficionados feel right at home. Some sweeten the deal with food, liquor and an elegant atmosphere for entertaining. Whether you just want to relax and enjoy a smoke with the guys, or kick up your heels at a noisy nightclub, the L.A. area has several places definitely worth checking out.

The Grand Havana Room
301 North Canon Dr.
Beverly Hills, CA

This is the place to go if you want to rub shoulders with the most elite cigar smokers, but there is one thing you must know up front. The club is members-only, and you have to be recommended by a member in good standing. The fortunate few who make the cut are allowed to enter through the adjoining restaurant On Canon, where they will be greeted by a hostess who sends guests up a secret elevator to the super-private enclave. There they will find a private smoking lair as well as a glassed-in humidor where the rich and famous store their favorite cigars in private lockers. If you want to be treated like a VIP (or meet a few), this is the place to go. The food gets rave reviews and the room’s most famous regulars include the likes of former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Shaquille O’Neal. Guests praise the club’s low-key atmosphere and lack of paparazzi-seeking B-listers. The only downside to the Grand Havana Room is getting inside in the first place.

La Descarga
1159 N. Western Ave
Hollywood, CA 90029

If you prefer a cigar bar that’s not so ritzy, but a lot more fun, be prepared to cut loose and let your hair down at La Descarga. Don’t let the downscale Hollywood address fool you—this Cuban bar has the ambiance of a speakeasy where customers dress to impress and have a good time. Besides cigar smoking, La Descarga offers live music, dancing, strong drinks (especially rum) and a sexy burlesque show. One visitor remarked that a trip to La Descarga was “like stepping into a seedy Havana bar and smoking a cigar with Fidel Castro.” If smoking your favorite cigar while sipping a minty mojito as Cuban rhythms fill the air is your kind of good time, La Descarga is your kind of place. While this club is certainly worth taking a drive across town, the neighborhood is still dicey, so we do advise paying the $8 for valet parking. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends.

Buena Vista Cigar Club
9715 South Santa Monica Blvd.

Beverly Hills, CA 90210

310-273-8100

A bit less ritzy than the Grand Havana Room but still chic and classy, the Buena Vista Cigar Club is a relaxed spot where the cigar lover can enjoy a fine stogie while surrounded by a full bar and large screen TVs showing the hottest sporting events. The club was originally founded by the perpetually tan movie star George Hamilton in 1995, and is now run by Rigo Hernandez, who developed his love for cigars as a child in his native Cuba. Hernandez went on to become a distributor of fine cigars and has been running the Buena Vista Cigar Club since 2000. Obviously, this is a man who knows his cigars and enjoys introducing his customers to the very best! The place is still a favorite with the upscale celebrity crowd, but also makes newcomers feel welcome. Be sure to get Rigo to regale you with stories of his youth in Cuba!
