A Fragile Little Thing
You would think that a plant that will grow where more common food plants struggle would be quite tough and that could only be supported by the fact that in colder climates the plant can die off in winter but grow again from the same root system for year after year. However the tobacco plant isn't as tough as we think and it should be thought of as a delicate little thing that can be affected by the smallest change in its environment.

Obviously all plants are going to struggle to survive in a drought but even in periods of good rainfall you can notice the difference in quality between regions based solely on the amount of rainfall they have had. What constitutes a season with ‘normal' rainfall does vary from country to country ... even when they're neighbors ... so cigar aficionados will watch things like rainfall figures for a growing season very closely.

One thing that can't be watched so closely is the amount of nutrients that a farmer will add to his soil. Too much or too little and the quality of the crop is ruined but when the farmer gets it just right then the crop is everything that he ... and we ... hope it will be.

Now if all that sounds like a rather difficult balancing act then you're right, it is, but the people who grow the best tobacco have years of experience and they almost always get it right. And that means that we get the best quality tobacco in our cigars so the next time you light up spare a thought for the farmer who put his heart and soul into growing what you are about to turn into smoke.

Watch for Part III in our series "From Seed to Shelf" where we discuss the growing cycle and harvesting ... the tobacco is starting its journey to your favorite store.
