In this article, I am going to introduce you to the intricacies of hand-rolling cigars. We will look at what it takes to get that beautiful stogie to your eagerly anticipating lips. Enough for the intro - let's get this article...rolling.

Every time I pick up a cigar, I roll into between my fingers, feeling for imperfections, sponginess, veins - all in an effort to define in my own brain whether the cigar has been properly constructed or not. As if I am an expert in the matter. Sure, I have smoked my fair share of cigars and in some ways that gives me a good deal of knowledge about them. But have I ever sat in a hot, sweaty room and rolled stick after stick while a burly mustachioed muchacho read his favorite passages from Hemingway for twelve hours straight, seven days a week? No thanks.

I'm getting ahead of myself a little here. All I am saying is that sometimes I forget (and I suspect other smokers forget) just how much effort goes into making these perfect cigars. We tend to be overly critical of our favorite pastime. It reminds me of how critical I used to be of movies. I used to openly mock movies like Transformers and Battleship. Then I visited the set of a friend that was directing a low budget film and saw the amount of work that went into making even a five minute short. After that, I had a new respect for even the worst films.

And so to, is the way I feel about cigars after visiting factories and doing plenty of research.

Cigar rolling is an art - just like painting, music, and even writing. It takes a smidge of talent and a ton of practice - years of dedication. People see the end product and may appreciate it, but they will never know the labor of love that goes into it.
