Ever considered taking a cruise, but don’t want to be stuck on a boat out in the middle of the ocean with a thousand or two people you have nothing in common with? Why not take a music cruise!
Watching the commercials for those big cruise lines, you’d think that all of them are aiming for families, and that every ship is crawling with young’uns. That’s because they’re aiming for the mass market, but there are actually a variety of specialized cruises available that cater to a much smaller niche market. One of the more popular types is generally referred to as a “blues cruise,” although the category has expanded to include other genres of music. Basically, a blues cruise offers several big name acts and a few lesser-known ones performing shows and jams every night. Some also offer songwriting workshops or cooking classes featuring the artists’ favorite cuisine, while the most casual allow guests to jam with the acts! These are cruises for grownups, and are ideal for couples who share the same tastes in music. Of course, these music cruises offer all the usual amenities you expect to find included in the tab for a luxury cruise, including gourmet food available 24/7 and stops at popular ports of call in the Caribbean. If you’re interested in taking a music cruise, be prepared to book your trip early, because some of the more in-demand cruises are already sold out and many fall 2012 cruises are already heavily booked.
The granddaddy of music cruises is the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, which has entertained thousands of musicians and blues cruisers for several years. The LRBC offers what they call a “Blues Village,” offering cruisers a week at sea being entertained by performances and pro jams on five stages, as well as artist spotlights that allow the acts to showcase their chops in a more intimate setting. The next Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise of the southeastern Caribbean sets sail October 27-November 3, 2012, with artists including Taj Mahal, the North Mississippi Allstars, Buckwheat Zydeco and the Brooks family dynasty of Lonnie, Ronnie and Wayne Baker Brooks. The cruise will depart from San Juan, Puerto Rico and dock at Barbados, St. Lucia, Martinique and Dominica before returning to San Juan. All this good music and fun doesn't come cheap. The highest priced suites are already sold out, but accommodations still available include interior staterooms for $1675 per person for couples up to Aqua Class Verandas for $2700 per person.
