Fill the Cooler

Now that your cooler is clean and free of any odor, it’s time to fill it up.  It’s a good idea to take some Spanish cedar from old cigar boxes and line the sides of the cooler.  This helps with maintaining humidity, aging, and adds some nice aroma and flavor to cigars as well.  Use your own boxes, or you can even ask your local cigar shop if they have any they’d be willing to part with.  You don’t need to actually attach the cedar to the sides of the cooler with glue, nails, or anything else.  Simply standing it up is good enough.

Next, figure out how you want to arrange your actual boxes of cigars and plan accordingly.  Place your humidification beads (or any other preferred humidification item) in a small container and load them into the cooler in your location of choice.  You can read more about how many you’ll need in the aforementioned cigar FAQ.  Finally, load your hygrometer in the cooler.  Close up the cooler and leave it be for one or two days so that it can absorb moisture.

Checking the Environment

By now you are probably dying to finish up and load your cigars into the cooler to transform it into an official “coolidor.”  We are almost there, but you need to have the right environment.  Check the hygrometer to make sure that it is in the 60 to 65 percent RH range.  If it is, you can go ahead and load your cigars.  Check RH for the first few days just to make sure that it’s stable and in the proper range.  Remember to keep your coolidor at least half-full.  If it begins too look a bit empty, add more cedar or, better yet, buy more cigars!

Well, there you have it.  As you can see, building a coolidor is not all that complicated.  Just follow the aforementioned steps, and you’ll have your very own coolidor with very little work involved!

If you have any questions about coolidors, humidors, or any other cigar accessories, feel free to ask them at Puff’s Cigar Accessory Questions board.  This particular board is filled with questions and answers on cigar accessories and is a great place to share any of your tips or personal recommendations with other members.  You can also use the board to show off your own coolidors and how you made them.
