Those points may lead you to think that the moister the environment around your cigars the better it must be for them but anything above 80% humidity is just as bad as a dry environment. You may also think that keeping your cigars near a heater might be a good idea too ... but it isn't. A heater can dry out your cigar very quickly.

So what would Cigar Goldilocks be happy with? Experts all agree that a constant 70 degrees and 70% humidity is just right. Of course there are some who disagree and suggest perhaps a degree or two more for both the temperature and the humidity would be better but try that ‘just right' 70 number and I'm sure it will work for you.

Establishing and Maintaining the Right Environment.
To achieve that "just right" environment for your cigars the first thing you must do with your humidor ... and here we're talking about a wooden humidor, not a plastic bag ... is season it and you must do that before you put any cigars into it.

To season it, obtain some distilled water ... not just ordinary tap water ... and a small clean (new) sponge. Add some distilled water to the sponge and wipe the dampened sponge over all the wood inside the box. Then place the damp sponge inside the box making sure that it is resting on something like a piece of plastic or plastic bag. Don't just sit the sponge on the bare wood.
