Eliminate or suspend unnecessary bills
Bills are like a nagging parasite that never goes away. Unfortunately, they are a part of life. While there are certain bills that are necessary, such as the mortgage or rent, utility bills, etc., there are many that are not. Since your aim during this month of financial discipline is to cut out the fat, you must analyze all of your monthly bills and decide which ones you can do away with.
A gym membership is a common bill that most people have even though they don't take advantage of it. Do you really need that membership? Are you a hardcore gym nut? If so, you will want to keep it, but there are cheaper alternatives to the gym. The alternatives will be discussed later on. Otherwise, if you just have your gym membership to give you the peace of mind of belonging to a gym, you can probably do without it. Other examples of unnecessary bills hit the entertainment arena. Things such as magazine subscriptions, online memberships to websites, or services like Netflix. The goal is to simplify, and these are extraneous costs that subtract from your bottom line.
Of course, many bills cannot simply be stopped. Many come with a one-year contract. However, some services do allow you to suspend the memberships. Many gyms allow this, as does Netflix. Find out which bills fall under this category and suspend them. Cleaning up your month financially will help you see how much more fiscally responsible you can be. This will also teach you a lesson about future memberships. If you see that you have a habit of buying into memberships and subscriptions that eventually become useless, you should avoid getting into long term contracts. Choose short term options, or take a trial run before putting your finances on the line.
