Since 1980, the obesity rates among adults have doubled, while the rates for children have tripled. From these numbers, it is evident that obesity is an epidemic. To halt this epidemic, healthier eating habits must be put into action.

A healthy diet does not only effect your outward appearance. It can also help your body lower the chances of acquiring such nasty illnesses as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more. A healthy diet also helps in maintaining a healthy mind, with improved mood, memory, and more energy overall. Although eating healthy sounds like a chore to many, it does not necessarily have to be that way. Here are some tips to follow that can help you make eating healthy a part of your everyday life. These tips combined with a solid exercise routine can help ensure that your body becomes healthier inside and out.

Shift your diet gradually

Humans are creatures of habit, and many changes that occur overnight usually do not last long. Depending on your past or current eating habits, switching to a healthy diet may be a huge jump. Thus, it is better to make the change gradually. You want to make eating healthy a long term goal that will last, with any luck and dedication, for a lifetime. This is not meant to be a diet. Instead, it is a lifestyle.

One way to gradually shift your diet is to think of some foods that you enjoy that are healthy at the same time. Think of ways to incorporate them into your diet. Make some new additions to your daily cuisine, such as a new vegetable or a side salad. Try to make small, yet important substitutions when cooking. Instead of using butter, opt for olive oil. Small steps such as these will slowly get you acclimated to eating a healthy diet. As time passes, you can keep implementing them until you eventually phase out your previous unhealthy choices. Also, if you do not exercise, you can, as with your diet, gradually add an activity each day until you get into the habit of working out routinely. Even if it's only five minutes long, it's a start.
