Make a daily habit out of eating fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables are an extremely vital part of a healthy diet. Both are packed with nutrients and antioxidants that help the body fight off and prevent diseases such as cancer. Fruits and vegetables also carry plenty of fiber, minerals, and vitamins to keep the body running at an optimal level. Best of all, they are also low in calories and can help you keep a slim figure.

As for the proper daily amount of fruits and vegetables, you want to aim for five portions at the very least to ensure that your body is getting the proper amount of vitamins, minerals, and other helpful elements that they have to offer. Fruits and vegetables are highly varied, so mix things up to keep your diet from becoming mundane. You can add what are referred to as sweet vegetables to your diet for extra flavor. A few examples are sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, and corn. Not only do sweet vegetables add valuable nutrition to meals, but they also can help reduce certain cravings you may have for sweets such as candy.

Another important category other than sweet vegetables is that of greens. A few examples include lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, and kale. Greens help keep the body's respiratory and blood systems strong, and they contain vital minerals such as vitamins A, C, and E, iron, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and more. One important practice to follow when eating vegetables is to avoid the temptation to fry them. Also, steer away from dipping vegetables, such as carrots, into dressings that are packed with fat and calories.

In terms of fruit's value, this food group can offer fiber, and the aforementioned vitamins and antioxidants to your diet. Fruit not only tastes great and is refreshing, but each variety of fruit helps supplement the diet in different ways. Apples, for example, are packed with fiber, while berries can help fight cancer. Avoid the mistake of believing that fruit juices are good for you, since many are loaded with tons of sugar. If you are going to eat canned fruit, drain the syrup which also has plenty of sugar. Avoid the temptation to eat too much dried fruit as well, as it is usually high in calories.
