Incorporating exercise via common daily tasks
For some, the following tips may seem a bit amateur or low on the intensity scale. That does not matter. Remember that the goal is to transform your day into one that includes exercise in one form or the other. This way, lack of time is not a valid excuse. Also, these tips avoid excluding those who are not workout warriors but still want to become active.
When at home:
-
If you live in a home or apartment with two stories, use this to your advantage. Walk up and down your steps to increase your heart rate. If you don't have stairs within your home but live in an apartment complex, use those instead.
-
Turn your chores into exercise by picking up the pace. If you are cleaning or scrubbing, do it with emphasis and move around more so that you burn more calories and sweat. Mowing the lawn or landscaping is one household chore that is a great workout in itself.
-
While you are on the phone, walk around as you talk. Even if you just stand, you will end up burning more calories than if you are sitting.
-
Take your remote control and hide it. Should you need to change the channel or adjust the volume, stand up and do it. Avoid being sedentary. Better yet, try incorporating some exercises while you watch television. Crunches are just one example.
When out and about:

-
Going to a place near your house? Why not ride a bike there instead of driving? If it's not too far, you can also walk. This will add some exercise to your day and also help you save gas money and is kinder to the environment.
-
If you use public transportation, get off before your destination and walk the rest of the way.
-
Thinking about using the elevator? Opt for the stairs instead.
-
Avoid the habit of looking for the best parking space. Save time, park far away, and walk to your destination.
-
When at the grocery store, save the bag boy some effort and carry your own groceries. If you can't carry them all the way, use the cart and then load them into your car on your own.
