gym1 Whether you are an avid gym-goer or an exercise newbie, you may hit a point where your trips to the gym become boring. While boredom at the gym can definitely become an obstacle to reaching your fitness goals, it can be overcome. Here are some tips you can follow to get you out of a rut and motivated once again.

Shift your goals

Working out does not have to center around one specific goal. Your body will benefit from a wide variety of workouts that can take you closer to achieving different goals. While some tend to visit the gym to build muscle, others do so to lose weight or become more lean. Whatever reason you may have for going to the gym, switch it up.

If you have been hitting the gym for the last few months with the sole goal of losing weight and trimming fat, change your goal to now build muscle. The routines for building muscle differ from those that trim fat, so you will have to completely restructure your exercises. By doing so, the old routine that turned boring will be out the door, and you will have a totally new routine to look forward to. Not only will this change up your regimen and cure boredom, but your body will obviously benefit and will respond to the new exercises. Doing the same routine repeatedly will lead you to a plateau, and you will stop seeing results as before. As you see positive results from your new workouts, you will become more motivated to visit the gym.

Change the equipment you use

Luckily, many gyms nowadays have more than one type of exercise equipment to fill your needs. One reason many people get bored at the gym is that they stick to using the same equipment over and over again. Humans are creatures of habit, and using a particular machine can seem like second nature. This is fine for a while, but it can be counterproductive. Using the same equipment and doing the same exercises repeatedly will not create enough muscle confusion. Your body will become accustomed to the exercises and you will hit a plateau. So, not only does it become monotonous, but it also reduces results.

If you have been using machines for strength exercises, switch to free weights. Throw in some cable exercises. Change it up. Each type of equipment has its own merit, and will help improve your overall strength and fitness. Do you use the treadmill all the time? Try the elliptical machine, or a Stairmaster. Keep your routines fresh and your mind and body will follow.
