In part two of our travel series, we’ve chosen to continue our focus on the best golf resorts in the Continental US—many have received an array of prestigious awards and accolades.

Bandon Dunes Resort
Bandon, Oregon

Situated along Oregon’s southern coast, Bandon Dunes offers four distinctive golf courses—Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old MacDonald.

Players have been enthusiastically awaiting the opening of Old MacDonald, the newest course, and they will be thrilled with its creative and challenging layout. The new course was designed by Tom Doak and Jim Urbina, and with oversight from one of the country’s most respected golf course architects, Charles Blair Macdonald.

In keeping with the “Old MacDonald” theme, adjacent to the first tee is a converted stable that will soon open as the pro shop. A memorable first tee on this course, called the “Double Plateau,” pays homage to a MacDonald design signature—an incredibly large driving zone. As players are challenged with the changes in elevation throughout the course, they will also be dazzled by the brilliant ocean views.

Bandon Dunes was the first course built at the resort-- designed by Scotsman David McLay Kidd. Boldly positioned on a high bluff above the Pacific Ocean, this challenging course rolls along native sand dunes, with each hole offering a stunning ocean view. Pacific Dunes, open since 2001 and designed by Tom Doak, is very different from its sister courses at Bandon Dunes Resort. The course was intentionally carved into the existing terrain, making it seem like part of the natural landscape. It captures the rugged, windswept beauty that is one of the hallmarks of Bandon Dunes Resort. Beginning in an area that features towering pine trees, the course meanders through 60-foot sand dunes.

Bandon Trails, opened in 2005, opens with its first hole set upon a massive sand dune, which unfolds to a beautiful meadow, providing a variety of compelling and exquisite scenic vistas. The course rises in elevation as it rolls through the coastal forest, finally ending at the dunes.

One element to note about all of the courses at Bandon Dunes, considered by many experts to be one of the country’s most popular golf destinations, is that many of the courses are graced with ocean breezes, which can be strong, depending upon the time of year. Golfers have commented that this only enhances the beauty of Bandon Dunes’ overall experience.

While Bandon Dunes offers a variety of accommodations, we recommend The Lodge, referred to as the center of activity at the Resort. It offers 17 single rooms and three four-bedroom suites. All of the rooms provide dramatic vistas of the golf courses, the ocean and/or the dunes.

Visitors will savor the range of eateries throughout the resort. In The Lodge itself, guests may select Tufted Puffin Lounge or Bunker Bar for more casual fare while The Gallery Restaurant provides a more sophisticated dining experience. Cigars may be purchased at the Bunker Bar, which permits smoking both inside and outside, and is considered an ideal après golf gathering place.
