mleadpicMaybe it’s the sunshine, maybe it’s the proximity to Cuba, but Miami is a great place to shop for cigars—and to smoke them. Unlike some cities, you can actually smoke your cigars in some of the cigar stores and bars in the Miami area. Even more unlike most metropolitan parts of the U.S., you can watch them being made. There are larger cigar factories in Miami that make brands like Don Pepin Garcias,
La Gloria Cubanas and Tatuajes, but none of them offer tours to outsiders. However, there are some very small cigar factories that have opened over the last few years and welcome visitors to come on in and watch how their cigars are made. How small? One to six cigar rollers per factory. This can really give you a taste of how they do it in Cuba!

According to Ernesto Perez-Carrillo, former owner of the La Gloria Cubana brand, “There’s a certain romance to making cigars in Miami. A lot of people say if you can't get cigars from Cuba, you can get them in Miami made by Cubans.”

Padilla Cigar Lounge & Factory

It’s not every day that you get to visit a cigar lounge that has its own factory (or maybe the other way around) but that’s why the Padilla Cigar Lounge and Factory is a must on any cigar lovers tour of Miami. It combines cigar factory, shop and lounge all in one location.

Soon after opening his cigar factory Fabrica de Tabacos Padilla in 2008, Ernesto Padilla spoke to Cigar Aficionado about what he hoped to accomplish. “The idea is to have people hang out and smoke as they watch cigars being made. People need to understand [that cigars are] a luxury product. You don’t need it to breathe, you don’t need it for food. You should appreciate it—and I think people should appreciate how much work goes into making a cigar. It’s something I’ve always wanted to build.”

Casa Felipe
It’s not an actual cigar factory, but Case Felipe does have its own cigarmaker, as well as a large selection of Felipe Gregorio cigars. The brand’s owner Philip Wayne combined his two passions of fine cigars and fine wines into a comfortable space where visitors can take part in a game of dominoes while puffing on a cigar and sipping wine. Smoking is allowed inside and out, making this a cigar smoker’s perfect hangout. Big spenders will want to pick up a premium Felipe Felipe Rothschild cigar for $168.00.

Macabi Cigar Bar
Las Olas has a relaxed, Bohemian sort of charm, and no place typifies that spirit like Macabi’s. The most colorful things about this already colorful spot is the outspoken proprietor Pat Patel, who has no problem telling customers or anyone else exactly what’s on his mind. Enter this cozy bar and you’ll find a cloud of cigar smoke, dim lighting, a comfy couch and Ashokkumar Motibhai “Pat” Patel and his wife, Kit Kirti, who are very happy to tell you about growing up in Uganda, among many other things, while making sure your drink always gets refreshed. The tiny bar has only 11 seats, but they’re worth fighting over when you can enjoy 15 types of clove cigarettes, Silver Oaks cabernet ($225 a bottle), Pirates Brew and Spaten on tap, and more than 600 kinds of cigars priced $5 to $50. Just don’t get on Pat’s bad side.
