Nat Sherman steered his family business through the turbulent and sometimes difficult times of the 1960s and 1970s and was well positioned when premium cigar smoking came back into vogue during the 1980s but it was also a difficult time for Sherman and his business. For a while it seemed that the business was about to lose it’s way as gifts and other makers lower quality cigars became important for the business’ bottom line.

Oddly though the 1980s were also a time of growth and at times Sherman’s catalog went out to as many as six million people.

Right from the beginning Sherman had run the business himself and, while his sons had helped in the store during vacations from school, none of them had continued on in the business. Through the good times and the bad and through periods of ill health Nat Sherman had built his business and his reputation as he produced and sold fine cigars and unique cigarettes. During that time Nat Sherman became recognized as one of the most famous cigar manufacturers in the United States.

Nat Sherman passed away in 1990 but that wasn’t the end of the business empire that he had built up. When Sherman senior passed away it was time for his sons and daughter to come home and take control of the business and that’s what they did. Their goal was to return to the company to its roots and re-establish itself as a cigar and cigarette seller renowned for its class and style and by the end of the 1990s that’s what they had achieved.

For much of its existence Nat Sherman, the business, operated from a store front on Fifth Avenue and it’s smoking rooms became a mecca for cigar smokers across American and from overseas as well. However the business is growing and New York is changing too so this year it was time for the company to move to new premises and now their famous store is located on 42nd Street.
