Taste like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder, and no one can vouch for why one person enjoys one cigar over another. However, there are certain guidelines you can follow to optimize your experience. And those guidelines are what I am covering in this article. We will discuss what alcoholic drinks go best with what types of cigars.
For simplicity sake, I will start this discussion with wine, which has been paired with many varieties of food, including my favorites, chocolate and cheese. While cigars are not technically food (unless you are a beetle that is), they do offer flavor and taste, and since they stimulate the taste buds, as well as the nervous system, they seem an obvious match to pair with a nice glass of wine.
White Wines
White Wines, by and large, are more difficult to pair with a cigar than a red. Whites tend to be more mild in flavor and are often times dry, making it easy for the cigar to overwhelm them.
There are some sweeter white wines however that are not so dry. For starters, Pinot Grigio is an excellent choice. I like to drink a glass of Pighin or Santa Margherita with a mild to medium bodied cigar. I find it a nice balancing point, as the Pinot Grigio offers a slight fruity taste that is not overly powerful, yet not so subdued to get washed out by the cigar. Another advantage of a Pinot Grigio is that a good bottle will only cost you upwards of $25. You will do well with Italian Pinots as well.
If you want, you can also try a Chardonnay; it is not my favorite mix (nor my favorite wine) but it seems to stand up okay against a cigar.

Comments
In this article I talk about the basics of cigar-alcohol pairing. I talk about pairing cigars with wine, beer, brandy, scotch, whisky, tequila, and more. Its more of an overall guide, since your tastes will probably differ from mine, but I would love to hear what other people like to pair with their cigars.

Alcoholic beverages for me with a good smoke include white russians, rum&coke, and bourbon typically.. never been able to get into beer with a cigar. As for martinis falling under the 'mixed drink' category... unless you include stirring olives in my glass there's nothing mixed about a glass of gin.;-)

Yuengling beer...
Cold sweet tea...
Cold clear water...
Depends on mood, time of day, and the cigar

BTW: This "mixed drink" is amazingly economical since the lager mentioned above is about 50¢ for a 12 oz. can and the spiced rum mentioned above is about $15 for a 1.75 liter bottle.
