"Planning a what????" I can hear some of you ask and I can understand that. The word 'herf' is quite unusual and if you're tempted to head for Google to find out just what it means let met save you the trouble.

For cigar smokers a 'herf' is a social gathering of cigar smokers where they can share their love of cigars. That's it, plain and simple; it's a gathering of cigar smokers where we can talk about cigars and share our knowledge with other cigar smokers and generally have a good time. You might think of it as a "Cigar Party".

Now if you're wondering where the term came from then I can help you with that too. If you were to ask Google about a herf one of the links it would point you to comes from the UK. Someone there suggests that the term came into use because, during the 1960s, many American cigar smokers would gather to enjoy their cigars while listening to the music of Herf Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

If you happen to believe that then, I'm sorry, there's definitely no cigar for you. The leader of the Tijuana Brass was Herb Alpert and he was never known as Herf and, let's face it, if listening to the Tijuana Brass was important for cigar smokers then a lot of us wouldn't be smoking cigars today.

No, the term did not come from the Tijuana Brass but it did seem to come into use some time back in 1996 when it was first used on a cigar smokers' newsgroup on the Net. Back then someone used the term to describe the act of drawing on a cigar. Today the term has become popular to describe the social gatherings of cigar smokers and you will see those who attend herfs referred to as herfnicks.

And if that makes me a herfnick then I am proud to wear the label because the herfs that I've attended have been great times of fun and fellowship with people who share a love of cigars. They've also been times when I've learned a lot about cigars and if you haven't been to a herf then you really should try one ... you'll become a herf enthusiast just like me!

Planning a herf is not difficult because quite often it's one of those events that take on a life of its own. All you need to do is to get the basics right and everything else will follow on as the attendees settle down to have a good time.
