pipestobacco faqs
tobacco terms and definitions

faqHi and welcome to the first in a series on Pipe FAQ’s, where I will try to answer questions from both new and old school pipe smokers. Pipe smoking, like cigar smoking, is not as simple as lighting up some tobacco and puffing away. This article will help you get the most out of your experience.

If you have read my FAQ’s on cigar smoking, then you will be familiar with the layout and style of this article. If not, then have no fears – it is pretty straight forward. I take questions from both new and veteran smokers and answer them in an answer/question format. I try to alternate between beginner and veteran every other question.

And of course, before I begin, one caveat: when it comes to smoking, be it cigars, pipes, or cigarettes, many questions can have a plethora of answers. If you have a different solution than the ones I offer herein, feel free to drop us a comment.

Question: My pipe will not stay lit no matter what I do. Is there some way to make it so I do not have to keep relighting?

Answer: Although I primarily hear this question from newer pipe smokers, you would be surprised to find that even people who have been smoking for upwards of ten years have issues keeping it lit. In fact, my grandfather used to be an avid pipe smoker, and I was always flabbergasted as a youth when I saw him continuously light and relight his pipe. If I had a time machine I could travel back and save him some trouble with some fairly simple advice: Blow.

I do not mean hurricane force winds. Just blow gently through the pipe when you notice that the tobacco is starting to burn out. If you have ever lit a boy-scout style fire, then you are familiar with the concept. A couple of blows will stoke the flames. To get the fire going after that, just cover part of the bowl and blow a few more times, adding a little more heave (nothing too strong). This should fix your problem and save you from having to relight your pipe over and over again.
