avopic1 Welcome back! Today marks a day for another Puff Profile. This time around we will profile AVO Cigars in terms of their well-rounded founder, their background, and some of the cigar lines they have to offer.

The man who founded AVO Cigars, Avo Uvezian, was not raised in the industry. Instead, Uvezian was raised in a musical background, as his father was a composer/conductor and his mother was a singer. From his birth in Beirut, Lebanon in 1926, Avo Uvezian was bound to have a musical destiny. He was a pianist who eventually made his way to the United States just after World War II. Once in New York City, he attended the prestigious Juliard School of Music to help further his musical career.

The Korean War required Avo to enter the military, where he would eventually showcase his musical gifts and later be moved into the band to play for officers. He continued this until his discharge from the military in 1952. The highlight of his musical career was when he composed the Grammy-winning song “Strangers in the Night” for Frank Sinatra in 1966.

Despite his success in music, Avo ventured into other territories as well, opening a piano bar and restaurant in Puerto Rico in the 1980's. It was there that he developed a liking for cigars, and Avo would make his own cigars for his establishments' guests. Demand for the cigars would grow, leading Avo to decide to expand production and seek a suitable partner.

In 1982, Uvezian met up with Davidoff's Master Blender Hendrik Kelner while traveling through the Dominican Republic. The two struck a chord, and decided to venture into business together, producing the AVO Classic in 1988. What started as a company that produced just 100,000 cigars in its first year would blossom into 750,000 cigars after three years and topping sales of three million cigars after ten years.

Today, over 20 years later, AVO Cigars is still going strong, with a wide variety of popular lines on the market. That's not too shabby for a man who started off in the industry without much prior experience.

Now that you know a little bit more about the history behind AVO, let's take a look at some of the cigars that the brand has to offer.
