For the would-be smartphone buyer on a budget, there are deals to be had, provided you can sign on for a new two-year subscription with one of the major carriers and are willing to choose from a limited selection. Last month, Amazon Wireless had all of Sprint’s 4G smartphones for a penny with a two-year contract and an $80 per month unlimited data plan. That meant no iPhones, but some other pretty cool models worth considering.

For the iPhone experience at a more reasonable price, AT&T has the 8GB iPhone 3GS for $.99 with a two-year contract including data. The 3GS doesn’t have all the features of the 4S (no FaceTime or Siri) but it’s still a great phone at a great price. AT&T also has the iPhone 4 starting at $99.99 for the 4GB model.

The other carriers also have some good deals, if you’re OK with another two-year contract. Verizon has these smartphones free on contract: BlackBerry Curve, Motorola Droid Pro, HTC Droid Incredible 2, LG Enlighten and HTC Rhyme.

If you’re in the market for the very newest smartphones, there are several brand new ones out now or coming soon, and all of them rate a look.

The HTC EVO 4G LTE is Sprint’s new flagship smartphone and features a 4.7-inch Super LCD display with 720p HD resolution, a dual-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an 8-megapixel camera powered by a dedicated ImageChip, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Sense 4.0, 16GB of internal storage plus microSDHC support, 1GB of RAM, NFC, 4G LTE and a 2,000 mAh battery. The HTC EVO 4G LTE will be Sprint’s first device to feature HD voice, an enhancement that will be enabled by Sprint’s Network Vision efforts. Sprint will start taking orders for the HTC EVO 4G LTE on May 7 at $199.99 with a two-year contract. Look for a launch some time in the second quarter.

Samsung has managed to keep its top end smartphone the Galaxy S III under wraps so far, but insider reports reveal an impressive package that includes the most dazzling display on the market so far. The Galaxy S III packs a high-definition, 1080p-resolution, 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display that can easily stand up to Apple’s Retina Display. Plus, add in the 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, 4G LTE, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a slim ceramic case, and you have an impressive handset. Release date and price still TBA.

If you want the maximum smartphone bang for your buck, you need to give the Nokia Lumia 900 a look. This brand new smartphone offers iPhone-type features with a $99.99 price tag. For that price, the Lumia 900 has a nice large 4.3-inch, AMOLED Clear Black display and is powered by a 1.4-GHz processor that runs on AT&T’s speedy new 4G LTE network. The Lumia’s main camera features a Carl Zeiss lens, with large aperture (F2.2) and wide-angle focal length (28mm). Not bad for under a hundred bucks. This is one of the few new smartphones that does not run on Android. Since the Lumia 900 is a collaboration between Nokia and Microsoft, it runs on Microsoft’s phone platform. The Nokia Lumia 900 in black or cyan is now available for orders at AT&T.
