Bent – Bent is another type of pipe that needs no real explanation – the name says it all. There are two types of bent: the half and the full. In addition, Bents come in every shape and size, meaning that you can have, for instance, an Apple Bent (indeed, this is a very popular type of pipe).
Billiard – When it comes to briar pipes, perhaps the king of kings is the Billiard pipe. In consists of the shank and a bowl that sits at a right angle (think of an “L” that has been knocked over on its back). You can find a number of different Billiards, chiefly the Liverpool, the Lovat, Lumberman, Eiffel Tower, and more.
Bits – Another name for mouthpiece. There are two types of bits – the taper and the saddle. The vast majority of bits are black in color, but you can see them in other colors as well (it is pretty rare though).
Bowl – This one is easy. This is where you put the tobacco.
Briar – Aside from the infamous Briar Rabbit and the briar patch, briar is a type of wood from Europe and the Mediterranean. It is considered by most to be the best material to make pipes from.
Bullcap – This is an old-fashioned shape that is not in much use today, though you will see one from time to time. It is shaped similar to the Bulldog, except that the top looks like a hat or “cap”.
Bulldog – The Bulldog is one of my favorite types of pipe. Maybe it is because I have a fondness for the dog with the same namesake, or because my hometown team is the Georgia Bulldogs. Either way, the Bulldog is noticeable by its bowl, which looks like the top part of a diamond, and it will sport either a taper or saddle bit.
Burl – This is the wood used to make briar pipes.
