Oriental
Oriental tobacco is high in sugar like our friend Virginia, giving it a sweetness that is ver pleasant. It is grown in the Mediterranean (Greece etc) and has a unique spiciness you will learn to associate with the plant.
Latakia
This Syrian tobacco is very strong and very popular in blends. It gets its unique flavor by its curing process, which involves firing the leaves above a bed of herbs and aromatic wood, which in turn adds flavor to the leaves.
Perique
This tobacco is grown here in the United States, just like Virginia. Specifically, it is born from New Orleans, and perhaps that adds to its colorful flavor. Often described as an earthy-fruitiness, the flavor is pretty strong.
Perique is a prized possession among pipe smokers and in blends, and fortunately a little goes a long way, as it has a limited production.
Summary
Well it looks like we are out of time again. We covered a lot of ground this issue, and you should now have a solid understanding of the types of cuts and tobacco used in pipe smoking. This is not an exhaustive list by any means, but it is a starting point, which we will build on as we continue this informative series.
By the end of it, you should be knowledgeable enough to choose the tobacco that is right for you, and even blend and experiment with your own mixtures. After all, experimentation is more than just an excuse to smoke more – it is fun as well.
As always, I invite you to submit any questions you may have, and just as important, if you have any information to share from your own personal experiences, we would love to hear from you. Just click on the old comment button below, or go hog wild and post a new thread over in the forums.
Thanks for reading and see you on the flip side.
Till then…
