Based on the mean of all employed adults studied in the survey, it was reported that Americans received, on average, 13 days of vacation per year. Of those 13 days, each person typically gave back 3 unused days. As a comparison, workers in France received a whopping 38 days of vacation, and only gave back 2 unused days. Japan seemed to be the nation filled with the hardest workers, as they gave back 7 of their 15 offered days. Of the several countries studied, including Canada, Great Britain, Spain, France, and more, the United States has the lowest number of vacation days by far.

What about habits while on vacation? Those tell another story, although it's not exactly a healthy one. Of the U.S. adults surveyed, nearly one in four admitted to checking their work's voicemail or email while vacationing. It's definitely not a great habit to completely shut off contact with the workplace, but doing so does seem to take out some of the fun and relaxation that a vacation is intended to provide. The survey also found that many had a hard time separating themselves mentally from the workplace, even if they were not there physically. Approximately 30 percent said they experienced stress related to their jobs while on vacation. Believe it or not, many actually had feelings of guilt when vacationing. When it comes to the sexes, just 29 percent of men expressed guilt when taking time off, while 40 percent of women felt the same way.

Remember the reasoning some used for not using all their vacation days? In particular, the one about not being able to plan too far ahead? Well, 19 percent of the U.S. workers surveyed said that they had to either postpone or cancel vacation plans altogether. Not only does that cause disappointment about not being able to follow through with an anticipated event, but it can also be costly with cancellation fees for travel packages, hotels, airlines, and more.
