Urasawa is the place to get your high-end sushi fix in the L.A. area, with celebrity sightings thrown in for free. Hidden in a chic building on Rodeo Drive atop pricey shops like Tiffany’s and Versace is a tiny 12-person dining room where the well-heeled sushi lover can enjoy a prix fixe feast for $275. What you’ll get for that price is a one-of-a-kind meal that varies according to the season and availability of the fish. Do expect foie gras and Kobe beef, which are flown in daily fresh, with no freezing. Urasawa is one of the very small number of restaurants licensed to serve blowfish, both as sashimi and battered. The incredibly tasty sashimi platter comes reclining upon an intricately carved ice block, while the Kobe beef is grilled in the tataki style and served with miso-based sea salt and a silky wasabi. Your meal is finished with a green tea, and a check for up to $1,000 for two if you partake of the fine, rare sakes and wines available. Be prepared to make a reservation at least two months in advance.

If you’re high rolling in Las Vegas and get the urge to blow a big wad of your winnings on sushi, head for Okada in the Wynn Resort. This is the place to get your sushi fix without leaving the desert, or getting too far away from the craps tables. The exotic ambiance, including a pagoda, waterfall and lagoon, can make you forget you’re in Sin City. While there’s also a teppanyaki room, cocktail lounge and dining area, it’s the sushi bar you want to check out. While the sushi choices may sound pretty familiar, such as spicy yellowtail, spicy tuna roll and shrimp tempura roll, you’ll find the quality to be much higher than that of your local sushi bar—and so are the prices. One order of the shrimp tempura roll is $28 and other items are over $40, but there are several choices priced $12-20. We recommend the Special Sushi Plate that includes 12 fish selections including Mirugai, Toro and Uni, as well as the Okada Roll of Maine lobster, asparagus, and avocado wrapped in soy paper.  It’s not hard to run up a bill of several hundred dollars here including drinks and desserts, but you’ll be getting the freshest fish served in the most delicious ways, as well as excellent service.
