That's more of the refs issues than LSU. LSU plays aggressive, there is not doubt about that, sometimes you can't stop in a split second or change you body's direction mid leap. No offense, I'd much rather them go balls to the wall than to have a more passive approach to a game that requires alot of impact.
With that begin said, I have played Football and on more than one time have had my facemask used to tackle me, it is not a pleasent feeling, just because of that, I cringe each time I see a blatant facemask because you don't feel it then, but the next morning is a different story.

Yeah, I can imagine that would create some sore spots the next day. I've played hockey my whole life, so I know the kind of pains that stuff creates, but I've never been face-masked in football like Smelley did.
I guess the part where the LSU guy dives onto Captain Munnerlyn after the play's over and spears him with his head is pretty blatant and purposeful; it wasn't like he was already in motion to do that, haha.
