I used to use a Zippo pipe lighter but gave up on it as I HATED dealing with liquid lighter fluid.
I have since, replaced my Zippo pipe lighter insert with a Thunderbird butane pipe insert (

Not only is it easier to manage than liquid insert, but since it has a bit of "throw" to the flame I find that I can direct the flame to different parts of the bowl much easier than I could do with the old Zippo insert.
