Wink Bad Cigar...No WAIT...Great Cigar!

I grabbed a handful of some H. Upmann (DR) coronas at the B&M the other day for 75% off...I figured what the hell. These things had a ton of age on them as the yellow cello indicated and appeared to be well taken care of.

Nevertheless, I decided to fire one up the other night. To be honest the first inch just blew, it was bitter, harsh and tasted like paper. I was disappointed but pressed on anyway.... and then it happened... WOW this cigar really changed its profile, nutty, buttery, smooth and the aroma was outstanding, right down to the nub. It was one of the best cigars I had in a while. I'm glad I gave it a chance and didn't pitch it.

My question is how can a cigar start out so bad and end so good? and could this be common of cigars with lots of age on them?
