I find some types of baccy burn "cleaner" which is perfect for caking/breaking in a new pipe. Burleys leave a fine white ash and tends to burn clean, no flecks sticking. Some Virginia's also burn uber-clean. Aromatics are to be avoided for breaking in a new pipe, most are very soggy.

And dry the load a little extra so you don't end up with soggy dottle, less soggy = more burn and less sticking of unburnt debris to the pipe. Note you DO want the white ash to stick, that is what helps the cake to form. Good tamping also helps keep the sides clear, new pipes will tend to burn down the middle leaving stickin's on the sides, tamp down the sides and move it into the middle to keep the burn even and keep the flecks off the bowl during the smoke.
